Welcome aboard and movements

Last night saw the investiture of some members into the Beenleigh fold and the beginning of journeys into the next section for Joey Scouts.

We welcome Stewart (Kaa) and Trelanya (Shanti) in as a Joey Scout Supporter and Assistant Cub Scout Leader respectfully.

We also saw Zahlia take the final plunge in becoming a Cub Scout,  and saw Matthew and Tynan begin the change from Joey Scouts to Cub Scouts. In a few weeks they will transition in and just be part of the big team!

Beenleigh Scouts Soil Spread Working Bee Cancelled - All done thanks to a parent and Bob Cat!

Firstly to all those that were coming to help with the soil spread on Sunday, thank you, thank you, thank you., That would have to be the biggest response ever to a call to arms for a working bee.

But thanks to the Whalen Family, who had a Bob Cat, on hand we no longer have to attend as it has been done for us. I can not thank Greg enough for taking time out of his day to attend to the ground for us. Huge thank you is still not enough.

For those that are disappointed that it is called off - yes I can hear you all sobbing and stamping your feet in frustration, we do need to organise a working bee in term 3 to get the fence repaired.

Thank you again to everyone who offered to bring Wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes and many extra hands. Enjoy your Sunday off.

What assistance can you offer?

Hi everyone,

Now that things are settling down and most of my hats I have been wearing are coming down to one,  it is now time for me to focus on Group matters. One of the core things that I would like to find out from everyone is what resources we have within our family pool. By this I am looking to put together a list of tradesmen and other services that families within the group can provide from time to time.

Now I am not asking to donate your time every time we need help, as there are times when we have to pay for fixes or repairs. I am seeking from everyone what professional type services they can provide to the group. I am very keen to tap into an electrician, builder, gardening services etc. For paid work I would prefer to offer work to those within the group first before seeking outside assistance.

In the next three years I have a group plan that will see some changes around the den, assuming we can get the grants for them or can fundraise to cover these costs. As is always the case when you are trying to find the right person, you don't even know they exist under your nose. This came up when discussing the proposed shed design with a Scout Family member.

Proposed changes in next twelve/eighteen months:
  • Make over of the Scout Cupboard (similar to the Cub cupboard)
  • Possible quote for a Kitchen makeover
  • Potential work in the shed for shelving and cupboards for lock away storage or patrol meeting room.
  • Grounds garden project
  • Seating around the Campfire area.
  • Lighting improvements around the den
This is just a few ideas that we need to resource and have guidance or professional assistance with.

If you are prepared to offer your services please let me know and I will add you to my contact list. I am also offering you a chance to advertise your business services too with a business card area for you all to tap into. A pin board will be set up for you to add your cards too in the next month.

I look forward to hearing back on what is available to us.

Seeking Joey Scouts

The Beenleigh Scout Group is seeking your assistance in helping to promote the Joey Scout section to your family, friends, co-workers and schools. Our Joey Scout section needs an increase in membership, as the majority will move up to Cub Scouts by December, leaving that section with only a couple of Joey Scouts. Nobody like to see sad Joey faces :).

This section is the little known section and it runs from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm on a Tuesday, provides a great introduction to Scouting for all children 6 -7.5 years of age. They get to have a heap of fun, do lots of activities, enjoy a sleepover or two at other dens, and the work they do can earn them the Joey Scout Promise badge.

If you can assist in helping promote we have flyers at the den we can provide to hand out at schools. I am also keen talk with various school leaders to see if we can promote in the newsletters they distribute.

We all know how great it is to be in Scouting so please spread the word and if you have people interested please have them contact me for more information.

Regards and yours in Scouting

Caring & Sharing Activity as AWOL Yatala

Three of our Joey Scouts last Sunday visited the Animal Welfare League facility at Yatala. This was all part of their Caring and Sharing section of the Joey Scout Promise badge.

Upon arrival we were greeted by Kath and Lucy. We were treated to a session on how to look aftger and care for your animals.

We were even treated to Lucy doing some cool tricks for us and teaching that all dogs are smart and will behave if treated correctly. Our three Joeys, Luke, Jacob & Tane were given the chance to hold hoops for Lucy to jump through.

After the tricks the joeys were allowed time to meet the other guests of the facility. Here they learnt all about how dogs and cats can adjust after having legs removed. These two dogs had legs removed due to accidents and other reasons. They were very playful and were a little wobbly on three legs. But still full of fun.

Next we all visited the cat area and got to spend some time with these animals. However, I think the Joey Scouts were more interested in playing with the cat toys than the cats :)

Following on we get to look after kittens in a small area inside the office and check out the guinea pigs

Thanks to all at the AWOL Yatala and especially to Kath & Lucy for taking time out of their schedule to spend time teaching us about being better pet owners.

Clean up Australia Day

Beenleigh Scout Group will be participating in the Clean Up Australia Day activities. This year it was decided to keep the clean up local.

There is a website set up for this activity, and if you decide you can register your interest, however, we will still be following our standard Scouting practices for seeking permission to attend. Forms will be sent out in th enext week.

Our areas of clean up will be:
  • James St - Hammell Park area, opposite the Beenleigh Showgrounds,
  • Street and park area bordering Zander St, and
  • length of George St, from the roundabout at Hammel St, through to the Main St roundabout.
The designated start point will be the park area opposite the court house in James St. This is lower traffic area than opposite the Showgrounds on a Sunday morning. We can then walk to the areas and begin the clean up.

Time is down from 9am utnil 12pm - unless completed earlier.
